Spanish Teacher Needed

The Senior Center needs a Spanish instructor to teach Conversational Spanish at the Senior Center on Monday, Tuesday or Thursday mornings or afternoons. We need someone to teach a beginners conversational class and an intermediate conversational class, both of which would meet twice a week. Each class would be an hour long. Supplemental/Medigap Insur. Workshops being held

Information is presented to help you assess your need for supplemental health insurance plan, also known as Medigap. You will receive a packet of information that includes the Medicare supplemental health insurance plans approved for the State of Maryland, and instruction on how to determine which plan best suits your needs. We also cover basic information on the Medicare program and the Prescription Drug Program (known as Part D).

Free video, radio spots promote Medicare help

Medicare’s annual enrollment period starts Oct. 15, but millions of older adults are still confused about how to choose a plan that’s best for them. With UnitedHealthcare, NCOA has developed a series of free public service announcements that point people to online resources that can help. The Maryland Insurance Administration (MIA) is a state agency that regulates the insurance industry in Maryland. We do not sell insurance or recommend any insurer or agent. The agency conducts outreach activities and endeavors to better educate the public regarding all types of insurance coverage, issues, etc. MIA provides unbiased information in easy to understand language to assist the general public when making insurance-related decisions.

Assisted Living Regulations Meeting (COMAR)

Do you think Assisted Living Regulations need updated or revised? If so, please join Office of Health Care Quality and Maryland Department of Aging for a Town Hall meeting to be held at Washington County Commission on Aging on Monday August 8, 2011 from 12pm-2pm and again from 5pm-7pm. The second meeting of the day will be replication of the first so no need to attend both. Registration deadline is July 22, 2011. Due to late notification of these meetings you may still register by calling the Commission on Aging at 301-790-0275 ext. 238.

Maryland Senior Idol Winners for 2011

Annual Maryland State Senior Idol Contest

The Contest was held on Wednesday, March 30, at the Chesapeake Arts Center in Brooklyn Park MD. 16 Contestants, from eight counties, vocal talents were highlighted while raising funds for the Maryland food Bank. In previous years this event benefited Senior Centers that were impacted by natural Disasters. The contest was hosted by, Baltimore City Recreation and Parks Senior Division.

Sponsors: MASC (Maryland Association of Senior Centers, Baltimore County Department of Aging, Baltimore City Senior Center Directors and Managers, and Howard County Senior Center.

Judges: Russ Margo of Russ Margo and the Guyz Band, Entertainer/Musician for over 30 years.

Cathy Johnson - Locally Singer, Dancer, Comedienne, and Founding Director of ShowTime Singers in Ellicot City MD.

Norm Seifert – Vocal and Guitar Member of Russ Margo and The Guyz Band.

Winner- 2011 was Mr. Sterling Dorn, from Prince George’s County, singing “It’s not unusual”.

Runner Up-2011 was Mallory Anthony, from Baltimore County, singing “Getting to know you”

Our Local Contestants: Edward Harne sang “Will the Circle be Unbroken”and Rebecca Mills sang “From Heavens Point Of View”. They did a great job of Representing Washington County. They both sang with conviction, and power, as their songs told their stories. Judges and the Audience cheered them on, yet, competition was fierce.

Giving Thanks to Local Foundations

* The Alice Virginia and David W. Fletcher Foundation has generously granted funds in order to feed medically homebound seniors in the most urgent situations for a one year period.

* The Albert E. and Naomi Sinnisen Foundation along with the Kershner Sisters Foundation has contributed funds in order to purchase equipment to be used for senior nutrition sites

We are deeply grateful for the continued support of these foundations that improve the quality of life for our seniors.

Living Wills and Advance Directives*

The Washington County Commission on Aging will offer, by appointment only, preparation of the above documents at no charge. Even if you already have these documents prepared and would like to update or review them, we can do that, too! Volunteers trained by an attorney and in the presence of an attorney, will walk you through these "emotion-filled" documents and counsel you to make the best decisions resulting in great peace of mind for you and your family.
